Te Kāhui Tika Tangata, or the Human Rights Commission, is Aotearoa New Zealand's National Human Rights Institution committed to a holistic expression of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and human rights including respectful relationships, shared responsibilities, and rights activation. Our unique partnership between Designworks and Ogilvy enabled us to understand all aspects of HRC and deliver a solution that cares for its audiences. 

Human Rights is a complex topic, one that’s significantly increased in complexity across the last decade. We quickly identified HRC’s existing brand and online presence did not meet their audience’s needs, nor did it meet the internal strategic direction of Tiriti-based aspirations and making a positive impact for all individuals, whānau, hapū, communities and iwi in Aotearoa.

Working closely with Ahi Kaa (the Commission’s Te Tiriti and Indigenous Rights rōpū), we advanced their brand presence/guidelines redesigned (Figma/Photoshop) their entire website experience around audience needs, all to highly accessible standards. This included a bespoke PII complaint form process to really support users at their most vulnerable moments and deliver data into CRM for the HRC support team.

Using Silverstripe cloud in combination with Next.js and Vercel we have delivered a standards compliant website, built using component libraries to ensure HRC have full control over content layout but remains on-brand. The process included migrating existing content (structured & unstructured) programmatically and manually with a clear content workflow. For SEO we established a redirection plan and service to ensure continuity between old/new domains.

Since going live HRC have received a record number of form submissions and catapulted to the top of search rankings, reclaiming its rightful position as the definitive source on human rights in Aotearoa.
